Alfred Grenfell Haigh was a British painter in oil and watercolor born in 1870. He only received a few weeks of drawing instruction in Paris and no other formal training, Haigh started to paint professionally at the age of 30. He became a successful equestrian painter who favored hunting and racing subjects, as well as dog paintings. He was an intensely private man and as such was averse to the publicity and exhibition of his works, but had a number of patrons, including HRH The Aga Khan, the Duke of Portland and Lord Rosebery. Made several painting trips to America. The Duke of Northumberland has Haigh’s portrait of the ninth Duke, painted in 1933. His work was included in The British Sporting Art Trust’s 1983 show at Alpine Gallery.
