Percival Leonard Rosseau was an American painter renowned for his refined portrayals of sporting dogs, particularly setters and pointers. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, he began painting seriously in 1890s after an earlier career in business, bringing to his art a disciplined eye and a strong commitment to observation from life.

Largely self-taught, Rosseau developed a refined naturalism and an exceptional ability to capture canine anatomy, movement, and temperament. His works frequently depict setters, pointers, and spaniels in outdoor settings, often engaged in hunting scenes that combine careful observation with an elegant painterly style.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, Rosseau traveled to Paris, where he studied informally and absorbed contemporary European painting, especially naturalism and elements of Impressionism. In Paris he worked from life in parks and the countryside, refining his understanding of animal movement, atmosphere, and light. The French tradition of animal painting, combined with exposure to modern landscape practice encouraged a looser brushwork and a heightened sensitivity to outdoor effects that would become hallmarks of his mature style.

After returning to the United States in 1906, Rosseau established himself as one of the leading American painters of sporting dogs. His works appealed strongly to sportsmen, collectors, and major patrons who valued both accuracy and elegance. He exhibited at prominent institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Academy of Design.

Rosseau frequently painted outdoors, depicting dogs actively working in fields, marshes, and woodland settings. His compositions balance careful anatomical precision with atmospheric landscape painting; a synthesis shaped in part by his Paris experience.

Rosseau is widely regarded as one of the foremost American painters of sporting dogs in the early twentieth century. His paintings are prized for their lifelike characterization, painterly vitality, and evocative portrayal of the sporting tradition shaped by both European and American influences. Represented in significant museums and private collections, his work continues to be highly sought after for its technical refinement, warmth, and perceptive understanding of the relationship between humans and animals.
