Edward Aistrop was a renowned British painter specializing in dog portraiture, working in the nineteenth and early-twentieth century. He was well-known during his lifetime and was frequently commissioned to paint pets and champion dog portraits of many breeds such as bulldogs, fox terriers, Old English Sheepdogs, Clumber spaniels, St. Bernards or a favorite corgi, just to name a few. Most of his works were portraits and head studies on a small scale; however, he also produced larger narrative works, showing dogs ratting. Aistrop was a successful and prolific painter able to portray the true character of each pet.
